Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA)Payne & Dolan's principal product is hot mix asphalt or HMA for short. HMA consists of a predetermined combination of crushed aggregate, air and liquid asphalt cement. HMA is produced in large quantities in an asphalt plant. Proper design of mixes, including the determination of the proper type, size, shape and combination of aggregates and liquid asphalt cement is necessary if the pavement is to handle design loads. Mixes must also meet special customer requirements. Payne & Dolan's corporate laboratory was the first laboratory in the State of Wisconsin to receive national accreditation from AASHTO (American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials).
All of the company's laboratories have also been qualified by the State of Wisconsin to conduct acceptance, sampling and testing of materials for Wisconsin DOT National Highway systems projects. The materials designed in the lab are mixed in very large quantities in the asphalt plants. Plants are located strategically to serve customers and to allow quality to be maintained. Some sites are located in or near the source of crushed aggregates. Quality Control (QC) monitors product production to insure mix design requirements and customer specifications are met. The hot mix is transported in trucks and deposited in the hopper of an asphalt paving machine at the jobsite. The HMA is leveled with the paver and compacted, to a specified density, with rollers.
AggregatesWithout good quality aggregates, no pavement will perform. Payne & Dolan operates a number of sites providing a source for these quality materials. We also have recycling locations where both asphalt and concrete are salvaged. These products are crushed and reused as base course materials.
Some of the better known locations are Waukesha Lime and Stone, Franklin Aggregates and Midwest Aggregates located in northern Illinois. At these and many of our other locations, limestone and gravel is crushed, graded for proper particle size and either sold directly for use as base course or used in producing HMA for paving.
